SOBER CURIOUS / NO LABEL REQUIRED
Sober curious?
Start with a question.
Sober curiosity can begin with noticing your relationship with alcohol. You do not have to make a public promise, adopt a label or tell anyone your whole story.
By Mark The Diary. Lived experience and practical learning. Reviewed October 2026.
Notice one ordinary moment
Choose a moment you feel comfortable thinking about. What was happening around you? What were you hoping alcohol would do for you? What mattered to you afterwards? A few neutral words are enough. Skip a question if it feels too much.
Try one sentence: “In that moment, I was looking for ___.” You can write on paper or use the free private writing space. Online writing is temporary. Save anything you want to keep before leaving.
Prepare words for a social situation
You do not owe an explanation. If it fits your circumstances and any care advice you have received, you might use: “No thanks, I am choosing something else,” or “I would rather not discuss it.” Ask someone you trust to back up your boundary. There is no need to test yourself in a situation that feels unsafe.
Take a free starter guide

Support can be part of the question
A GP or local alcohol service can help you understand options. The NHS alcohol support page explains professional support and mutual aid. Our UK support directory links to independent services. You can ask for help without first deciding what to call your experience.
Stopping point: one question or one support request is enough for today. This is general information, not medical advice or a promise of an outcome.
